Abstract

SUMMARY This article takes a look at the classical accounts of sacred prostitution in the Ancient Near East, as well as at the alleged evidence from Mesopotamian and Syro-Palestinian sources. The analysis of the original Sumerian,Akkadian ami North-West Semitic texts makes quite clear that sacred prostitution is a misconstruction of a religious and cultural otherness. Such fabricationwas the result of a later misunderstanding—and progressive demonization— of both Mesopotamian cult and the remarkable role played by some women in earlier periods.
