Abstract
A large number of empirical or semiempirical equations of state (EOS) were used to determine the volume as a function of pressure1,2 and sometimes of temperature, mostly in the form p=p(V/V0,T). In the field of polymer physics and polymer manufacturing the form V=V(p,T) is more usefull. Our aim is to describe the volume of the glassy polymers Polycarbonate and Polystyrene with an EOS derived by Pechhold3 using elements of solid state physics. The parameters of the EOS — the bulk Gruneisen parameter γ, the bulk modulus K, the product Kα (α=thermal expansion coefficient) are determined firstly by fitting the EOS to the experimental data and secondly by direct evaluation of these data.
