Abstract

The chapter is on voter apathy in election in Nigeria's democracy, 1999-2019. The focal problem of the chapter is voter apathy in elections which threatens democracy. Primary and secondary sources are used. The findings are apathy in election, violence; insincerity of the INEC; illiteracy and ignorance, etc. caused voters apathy. Voter apathy implicates on democracy as there is negation of the tenet of democracy which states that majority rule instead of minority rule; dilution of the legitimacy of the elected; diminishes the social contract of democracy between the elected and the governed, etc. Voter's interest can be rekindled like making INEC to be transparent, removal of clauses which compromised its independence in the constitution, etc. Since elections are technical means of ensuring popular participation, there is every need to eliminate voter's apathy in election to guarantee mass participation to operate true democratic ideals. Neglecting this will keep us off track of the meaning of democracy.
