Abstract

Vortioxetine is a multimodal antidepressant that improves mood and some cognitive functions major depressive disorder (MDD). Vortioxetine has a complex pharmacological profile that includes 5-HT3 receptor antagonism, which is thought to induce regionally selective increases glutamatergic neurotransmission by suppressing activity in GABAergic interneurons. In the present work, the relevance of 5-HT3 receptor antagonism for improving mood and cognition will be evaluated in animal models of MDD and schizophrenia.
