Abstract

This chapter discusses the vortical flow phenomena on a helicopter rotor. It reviews the vortical flow phenomena on a helicopter rotor, such as tip vortices, shed vortices in dynamic stall situations, vorticity in the turbulent boundary layer, and means of their numerical simulation. The flow field of a helicopter rotor in forward flight is highly three-dimensional and unsteady. Vortices are produced in unsteady deep stall situations where the boundary layer separates in the form of dropped vortices. Some vortical flow phenomena on helicopter rotors can be simulated by numerical methods. However, some of them are still out of reach for numerical simulation today.
