Abstract

How to correctly make medical certificates? Avoid pitfalls! Making medical certificates is an important part of the administrative work of physicians. A medical certificate is based on a physician’s examination to establish that a patient can obtain a benefit or does not need to fulfil an obligation. Deontologically, a physician draws up this certificate truthfully, objectively, carefully and discreetly. Since certificates are intended for third parties, it is important to take patient-physician confidentiality into account, as well as the GDPR privacy regulation (General Data Protection Regulation). The date of editing is stated on the certificate, possibly another date can be stated retrospectively while taking into account the obligatory or optional communication with another physician with an extra-curative assignment. When a certificate is purely based on a patient’s statement, this is referred to as a ‘dixit certificate’. To limit the impact of (long-term) absence certificates, it is important to enter into a dialogue with the patient about the length of the absence. Closer cooperation with a physician of a student guidance centre (SGC) or an occupational physician can lead to an adjustment of the learning and working conditions of the person concerned. Insurance certificates may only state the current state of health. When in doubt, a physician specialized in insurance medicine can be asked for advice.
