Abstract

Summary The paper deals with the translation of fairy tales on the basis of cultural and language pairs (according to Christiane Nord) as well as on the basis of the Kollers Theory of equivalence. This article deals specifically with the Grimm fairy tales in numerous Czech translations and also with the Czech-German fairy tale collection Vladimír Mikolášek’s. Both corpora show parallels and differences, both in content and in form. Concrete problems, such as the equivalent lexicon or the stylistical specifics are discussed. Consideration is also given to updating and modernizing tendencies, differences between the corpora, as well as to the respective Grimm translations. Summarizing the paper, it can be said that culture is very important for the translation of fairy tales and minding cultural differences contributes to an adequate and successful translation.
