Abstract

Although ox and ass are not mentioned by the Evangelists as having been present at the birth of Jesus, the author points to their continued presence trough the ages in artistic renderings of the birth scene. While the presence of the animals can be explained theologically from Old Testament references in connection with the appearance of the messiah, Jacobi explores the symbolic nature of the ox and ass as pointing to the instinctive elements in man. These, indeed, must not be "left out of the picture", lest the unity and harmony of one's being be lost.
