Abstract

What does the increasing visibility of women in political top positions mean for their representation in the media? How does the public sphere change, when women, who are traditionally allocated to the private sphere, claim power? Examining the media coverage of women candidates for prime ministry in the past 20 years, the article discusses both questions. Despite the discourse about a new generation of women politicians I argue that the repertoire of roles for these candidates is still restricted to the metaphor of the »Landesmutter«. Thereby, traditionally gendered characteristics are being revalued. Yet, with the notion of the »Landesmutter«, a return to traditional feminities is possible.
