Abstract
Hebrew expressions incorporated into Judeo-Arabic constitute an essential structural component in that language, carrying a poetic ring. They often have a metaphorical, even ironic or jocular character, with a dose of sophistication. Recalling biblical phraseology or facets of Jewish society, they testify to the inseparable link between language, society and culture. Like many Hebrew words melded into Moroccan Judeo-Arabic, these linguistic components have evolved semantically, and have assumed new meanings, unknown to the dictionary. In some cases, they even represent genuine neologisms. The present study examines the diachronic evolution of ten idioms collected during different field surveys in an attempt to decipher the stages of shifts in meaning that they have undergone in daily usage.
