Abstract

A recent stratigraphic revision of the Middle Miocene deposits throughout the Aquitaine basin makes it possible to successively distinguish two marine phases referred to Langhian and Serravallian. The Langhian ostracod fauna was studied from thirty-five samples. They come from new outcrops located in the gulf of Manciet-Baudignan (central Aquitaine) and in the area of Saubrigues (Low-Adour). All in all (from both outcrops and boreholes), a bit less than 110 taxa make up this fauna, which was widely unknown till now. The qualitative and quantitative characteristics of the faunal associations suggest different palaeoenvironments on the continental platform: — continental environment, or lagoonal, or coastal and phytal with brackish influences, or infralittoral in central Aquitaine — infralittoral to circalittoral environments in the Saubrigues area. Each type of environment is characterized by a reference level, the species which are represented and their relative abundance. A comparison is made with some deeper synchronous deposits from boreholes (Soustons, Frouas) located near the Atlantic coast.
