Abstract

I don9t think I9ve ever met a pediatrician who didn9t want to volunteer overseas. many times has a colleague, on hearing of a trip of mine, expressed enthusiasm for pediatric volunteerism in the developing world? We are, almost all of us, wonderfully global in our world view, even when local responsibilities render us rooted. The belief that all the world9s children are worthy of our attention was reflected in the healthy attendance at a How to Prepare to Work seminar at the 1994 AAP Annual Meeting. Additionally, the new collaborative relationship between the Academy and the Washington D.C.-based Health Volunteers Overseas reflects not only the Academy9s renewed interest in international child health, but will facilitate members9 overseas short-term volunteerism for our membership. An article in the January AAP News (page 13) explains how physicians might become involved.
