Abstract

The school-visitation programs conducted by art museum personnel provide opportunities for children to learn more about the perception and appreciation of art. Since all art education is the concern of art educators, it is important to learn more about these programs and how they operate. According to the 1974 report of the National Endowment for the Arts (p. 38), some 91% of the art museums in the United States offer a schoolvisitation program in which school children visit the museum as a group. Further statistics quoted in Museums U.S.A. illustrate the magnitude of the problem art museums are facing; at a time when budget dollars are being squeezed, educational activity is increasing (N.E.A., 1974, p. 42).
