Abstract

A volume photoelectric effect is discussed in which electrons are optically excited from one state to another within the conduction band with phonon assistance. The photoelectric yield for this type of photo-current is derived, and because of the mechanism by which this current arises it is found that the yield depends on the electron-phonon interaction matrix element. However, by noting the relationship between the electron-phonon matrix element and the optical constants of the metal, the yield can be expressed in terms of the optical constants of the metal. The size of this photocurrent is discussed and compared with other types of photocurrent.
