Abstract

The volume of the total breast and of the mammary gland of Japanese women in Japan and Hawaii was calculated from specimen radiographs of serially sliced breast enucleated at necropsy. The total breast volume had a positive correlation with the Quetelet Index (body weight/height squared) at all ages in both Japan and Hawaii. The glandular volume generally showed no significant correlation with the Quetelet Index except for Japan cases at the ages of 45 years or more. The large size of the breasts of Hawaiian Japanese old women was accounted for on the basis of a large amount of adipose tissue. Epithelial hyperplasia was uncommon among Japanese women (18.7%) and issei Hawaiian women (14.5%) but was common among nisei Hawaiian women (51.4%). In Hawaiian women of 45 years and over, the volume of the mammary gland, corrected by the Quetelet Index, was larger when epithelial hyperplasia was present than when it was absent.
