Abstract
The preparation and characterization of Ru(bpy)2(4-Methyl-4′-(heptyl-1-thiol)-2,2′-bipyridine(PF6)2 (compound III) is described. III was easily synthesized and was found to adsorb through the -SH functionality onto indium tin oxide (ITO) substrates. The voltammetric stability and apparent surface coverage of III on ITO were found to be higher in perchlorate than in sulfate media; ion-pairing of perchlorate with the adsorbed complex is implicated. The stability of adsorbed III decreased with increasing pH. Chemiluminescence (CL) was emitted from the modified ITO electrodes in the presence of oxalate at electrode potentials positive of the E∘′ of adsorbed III. CL intensity was found to be higher in sulfate than in the perchlorate electrolytes. The analytical utility of III with respect to its ability to form self-adsorbed monolayers on ITO and its chemical stability will be discussed.
