Abstract

The use of Flexible Alternating Current Transmission System (FACTS) devices has generally provided efficient solutions to voltage sag problems in industry resulting from wide application of sensitive devices. In assessing the financial benefits resulting from the installation of FACTS devices, it is more desirable to take into account the whole system, rather than considering individual nodes only. Having this on mind, the placement of FACTS devices should be performed with the aim of achieving maximum benefit for the whole system. Therefore, this paper employed a Genetic Algorithm (GA) approach to find the optimal location, size and type of FACTS devices for the purpose of minimizing the overall financial losses due to voltage sags in the system. Three types of FACTS devices are implemented in this study, namely, Static VAR Compensator (SVC), STATIC compensation (STATCOM) and Dynamic Voltage Restorer (DVR). The performance of the proposed algorithm is tested and illustrated on 295-bus generic distribution system (GDS).
