Abstract

The line losses of conductors in power system are gaining importance in order to conserve energy. Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS) devices have been utilized for loss reduction and voltage profile improvement. In this paper, two FACTS controllers like Static Var Compensator (SVC), and Thyristor Controlled Series Capacitor (TCSC) are considered in order to mitigate losses and improve voltage profile in power system. The placement of FACTS devices under steady state condition for voltage profile improvement and loss reduction is a problem of combinatorial non linear optimization. Differential evolution algorithm (DEA) has been used to solve and overcome the complicity of this combinatorial non linear optimization problem. The optimizations are performed on two parameters: the location and the values of SVC and TCSC. Simulations have been applied on modified IEEE 30 bus test system for two operating conditions. To validate the accuracy of results a comparison with particle swarm optimization (PSO) has been made. The results show the effectiveness of DEA than PSO in loss reduction and voltage profile improvement.
