Abstract

This paper attempts to design an adaptive proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller employing a Q-learning algorithm for the satisfactory performance of automatic voltage regulator (AVR). The PID controller parameters have been adaptively selected by applying the Q-learning method for ensuring better voltage regulation. The superiority of the developed controller has been studied and shown through analysis with other prevalent algorithms in the literature. Analysis of the result affirms the mastery of the developed adaptive PID controller considering the speed of response, peak overshoot and damping of voltage oscillations.
