Abstract

Voltage balance control of DC link capacitors in diode clamped multilevel converters (DCC) is a key problem. Voltage imbalance of capacitors in diode clamped converters generates low-level harmonics at the output and increases voltage stress across the keys. In this paper, a new hybrid method is proposed for balancing capacitors voltage of a five-level diode clamped converter. This method uses a modified quasi Z-source (MqZS) to create a simultaneous voltage balancing, incremental capability and voltage control of the DC link connected to the single-phase or three-phase diode clamped converter. It also has the capability to generalize for more voltage levels for this type of converter. In this paper, a modulation method is also provided to effectively control the shoot-through mode and incremental capability the DC link voltage. The performance of the quasi Z-source for balancing the capacitor voltage and increasing the voltage and the performance of the modulation method is proven by the simulation results.
