Abstract

This paper shows a high potential of micro hydro power for off-grid opportunities in Vietnam. After, a fully detailed structure of Micro Hydro Power Plant (MHPP) using the wound rotor synchronous generator for off-grid applications is presented. In stand-alone operating mode, the generator voltage and frequency strongly depend on the turbine speed, the current excitation and consumer load. To maintain a good level of voltage and frequency (230V, 50Hz), controls are necessary. The PI control is used to ensure the voltage regulation. This paper proposes a simple self-tuning fuzzy PI control for frequency regulation against large load variations. In order to validate the proposed controller, an experimental under changing in consumer load and water flow is developed in our laboratory prototype. It mainly consists of a 1.5 kW three-phase wound rotor synchronous generator, driven by 1.5 kW three-phase asynchronous motor, which emulates the hydraulic turbine. The experimental implementation of proposed control has been done by using dSPACE DS1104 controller board.
