It is shown how a new parameter, the pair potential calculated between two adjacent sulfur atoms of a metal sulfide, correlate with the observed rates of the hydrodesulfurization reaction. The differences between the first row transition metal sulfides and their heavier conjeners is due to the different spin states of the metal.
