Abstract

Migration of the centre of volcanism in the Hawaiian Island chain toward the East Pacific Rise with time is accounted for by a model which suggests that counterflow of material in the asthenosphere toward the Rise takes place in a zone which is of comparable thickness to that of the lithospheric plate.
