Abstract

A hydrodistilled essential oil from the sterile stems of Equisetum fluviatile L. was analyzed by GC and GC/MS.One hundred ninety-one compounds were identified in the oil accounting for more than 92.3% of the total oil. The major contributors were hexadecanoic acid (16.4%), (E)-phytol (15.2%) and hexahydrofarnesyl acetone (9.5%). The oil was marked by the presence of 84 fatty acid derivatives and 44 carotenoid derived compounds representing 39.8% and 28.6% of the oil, respectively.
