Abstract

The chemical composition of root and leaf oils of Valeriana pyrolaefolia Decne. was determined by GC and GC/MS, and 45 components were identified. Both oils were rich in sesquiterpenoids and characterized by high contents of valeranone (31.8–37.9%) and patchouli alcohol (8.6–12.9%). The leaf oil composition showed remarkable presence of a non-terpenoid, 2,6-dimethoxyphenol (19.8%), among the major compounds. The presence of valeranone and patchouli alcohol suggests it has commercial potential.
