Abstract
This conceptual paper takes inspiration from Jacques Rancière’s theorizing on politics to refine our understanding of otherness in management and organization theory. Departing from the notion of noise, we argue that those othered in management and organization are precluded from the realm of sensible speech and can thus not be grasped through widely used conceptual lenses such as voice or discourse. We introduce the concepts of voicing and noising to provide a novel perspective on the politics of otherness understood as “the Dispute over the Existence of the Dispute” (Rancière, 1998: 55) and argue for a renewed theoretical and empirical engagement with it.
