Abstract
In this chapter, we highlight diverse voices of, perspectives on, and actions of advocacy undertaken by English language educators in various parts of the world. By bringing in practitioners’ perspectives, this chapter creates connections between advocacy scholarship and actions on the ground, emphasizing the important advocacy work that teachers are carrying out at all levels. This chapter reports on a qualitative study and sheds light on what advocacy for English learners (ELs) and educators is, and how empathy and context play a role. At the same time, it is an act of advocacy in itself as we aim to empower TESOL professionals by acknowledging the importance of their advocacy work. Informed by the results of this study, we provide ideas for TESOL professionals in a variety of settings on how to advocate for students, themselves, and the profession overall. No advocacy action is too small, and any act of advocacy makes a positive impact on the lives of ELs and their families.
