Abstract

Because laser weapons are relatively easy to use and can exert powerful energy with high efficiency versus cost, the laser weapons are being developed competitively in the defense industry. A fast steering mirror is the key component for precision tracking and automatic beam alignment, which are the main performances of laser weapons. The purpose of this study is to verify the structural design and driving reliability for implementing the target performance of a fast steering mirror using voice coil actuators. For the performance evaluation of a fast steering mirror, the driving range for the available thrust considering of the electromagnetic force and also the dynamic characteristics within the driving bandwidth were investigated through electromagnetic and structural analysis. In addition, the structural robustness was verified by securing a sufficient safety factor based on the analysis of the fatigue life for the area where the stress was concentrated.
