Helfand, D. J. ; Chance, D. ; Becker, R. H. ; White, R. L. Abstract In a search for Crab-like supernova remnants in the Galaxy, 19 compact (<1arcmin.5) radio sources were observed with the VLA. Only the previously known supernova remnant (SNR) G21.5-0.9 has both a centrally peaked brightness distribution and integrated polarization greater than 5%, properties characteristic of Crab-like remnants. The remaining objects are either compact H II regions or extragalactic sources. The authors use these results to set a limit of ⪉5 on the number of undiscovered Crab-like SNR which exist in the Galaxy above a 6-cm flux density of 1 Jy. The implication of this result for the formation rate of galactic Crab-like remnants is discussed.
