Grasdalen, G. L. Abstract New K (2.2 observations are presented for a survey of galaxies. These sare combined with available measures of V-magnitude to form (V - K) scolors. The (V - K) colors of bright elliptical galaxies are found to shave a very small cosmic dispersion, while for a heterogeneous sample of sspiral galaxies the dispersion is quite large. There is no evidence that sthe (V - K) color of bright ellipticals depends on absolute luminosity. sThe (V - K) color of elliptical galaxies is found to have a strong sradial gradient. This conclusion is verified by detailed observations of sM87. The relation of the (V - K) color to other metal-content indicators sis briefly discussed.
