Abstract

Abstract Viz is the popular cultural magazine. This article addresses its significance for men, as its major purchasers and readers. A number of masculinist narratives are identified: conforming men/confirming masculinity; cautious men/calculating masculinity; contrary men/contradictory masculinities; courting men/comforting masculinity. The deeper structures of the text are also examined by an analysis of anal, testicular and buttockic discourses. The intertwining of these discourses is displayed in the reproduction of the parthenogenetic myth, in which men are the reproducers of each other and women are constructed as disposable. Viz thus appeals to an overwhelming male narcissism.
