Abstract
A series of eight Carboniferous hardcoals from Germany and France, ranging in rank from 0.80 to 6.08 %Rm has been treated physically/chemically in order to obtain a suite of samples on kilogram scale with concentrations of 96% vitrinite. The analytical procedure comprises several steps, i.e. : Sample selection, comminution in liquid ammonia as well as various mechanical grinding methods, sieving off, density determination, density separation, quality check, and finally storage. The resulting vitrinite concentrates were routinely analysed by coalpetrological methods. This procedure resulted in a series of vitrinite concentrates of approximately 5–12 kg each, with a vitrinite content of over 95%. The product has been splitted in a riffler and representative samples have been stored in sealed glass vessels under inert atmosphere.
