Abstract

In 1914, when the First World War broke out, Volterra was Senator – he was elected in 1905 – and was one of the more influential Italian scholars. He had published important works in several fields of mathematics and physics. He had introduced the fundamental idea of functional, and proved fundamental results in functional analysis. Volterra had always been interested in applications of mathematics to electrodynamics, hydrodynamics, and geophysics from the beginning of his scientific career.
