Abstract
The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of vitamin C and alcohol on biochemical and hematological indices in male adult Wistar rats. Twenty adult male Wistar rats weighing between 150-200grams were divided into four groups: control group A (distilled water), Group B (9mg/kg, Vitamin C), Group C (2mg/kg, alcohol) and Group D (9mg/kg Vitamin C followed by 2mg/kg alcohol, after 2 hrs); orally, for twenty-one days after which blood sample were taken for biochemical and hematological analysis. Results revealed significant increase in the value cholesterol, total protein, and liver enzymes (AST and ALP) in alcohol and vitamin C combination group when compared with the control group, no significant changes was recorded in BMI, FBS, WBC and BUN, there was significant decrease in the value of PCV, PLT, HGB, neutrophil and eosinophil in rats administered with vitamin C and alcohol when compared with the control. In conclusion, Alcohol taken in combination with vitamin C has deterioraing effect on the body and the use may be discouraged.
