Abstract
What drew Italo Svevo and James Joyce together was in part a profound similarity in artistic sensibility. This similarity can be understood in fairly concrete terms if one examines the parallel relationships that these two writers had with their younger brothers. Both writers drew, in remarkably similar ways, from their younger brothers’ often painful experiences life. Both writers, in short, needed to maintain an indeterminate identity – something for which the city of Trieste was peculiarly suitable – in order to become and therefore to create the characters that would inhabit their imaginative writing.

Se è vero che lo scrittore, quello che nel bianco e nero della pagina stampata è capace di creare una molteplicità di personaggi unici e viventi, deve avere un’identità malleabile, uno studio riguardo al modo in cui due grandi scrittori, come James Joyce e Italo Svevo, abbiano trovato in Trieste una città congeniale alla loro immaginazione, potrebbe rivelarsi fruttuoso. Quindi la caleidoscopica identità triestina è fatta di carta, risiede nelle opere degli scrittori della città; ed è per questo che la “triestinità” richiede una «sincerità assoluta», come dicono Ara e Magris (1987: 16), riecheggiando forse un’osservazione che lo stesso Svevo fece in una lettera ad un suo ammiratore inglese: «la qualità più importante che uno scrittore possa avere [è] una grande sincerità» (Svevo 1966: 817). Come Joyce – ed è senz’altro questa una delle ragioni alla base della loro amicizia – anche Svevo capiva che tale sincerità richiedeva una straordinaria capacità empatica, un rifiuto continuamente opposto alla tentazione di assumere una posa o un’identità fissa; richiedeva, per usare il termine preferito da Joyce, un certo tipo di esilio.
