Abstract

A simplified dislocation model is used as an aid to visualize the developed plastic wedge under plane strain conditions. In contradiction to the plane stress case under plane strain conditions the plastic wedge is limited to the immediate vicinity of the crack tip. It is shown that the extra volume in the vicinity of the crack tip is caused by a plastic shearing of the material in the wake of the crack.
