Abstract

The aim of this study is to visualize the transverse debonding along the fiber/matrix interface under both quasi-static and dynamic loading conditions to understand debonding initiation and progression. S-2 glass fiber reinforcement was used with SC-15 epoxy matrix to manufacture a single fiber embedded within a cruciform specimen. A modified tension Kolsky bar integrated with a high-speed synchrotron X-ray phase contrast imaging (PCI) was used to record the high-speed images of the dynamic debonding event. On the other hand, a quasi-static load frame along with a high-speed camera was used to obtain the quasi-static debonding event. The specimens were pulled at loading velocities of 0.25 mm/s and 2.5 m/s. The results showed that the crack velocity revealed minor increase with increasing loading velocity.
