Abstract
The article considers the history of becoming an amateur photographer in Kiev in the last decades of the 19th - early 20th centuries. It is noted that amateur photographers played an important role in the formation of the visual image of Ukraine, which became an essential element of Ukrainian national identity. The socio-economic conditions for the development of photography are analyzed; educational and exhibition activities of the photographic department of the Kiev branch of the Russian Technical Society and the Kiev Photographic Society Dager; the contribution of Kyiv amateur photographers to the development of the theory and practice of light painting.
