Abstract

The present paper employs China's interregional freight railway network from 2006 to 2011 and adopts the network analysis method to visualise the distribution of hub locations in China. Moreover, an econometric approach is used to determine important factors that affect hub location decisions. Our empirical results suggest that railway hub locations are unevenly distributed across regions in China. Most hubs are located around the capital city, Beijing, and there are no significant hubs in the southwest of China. Our results further show that the two important determinants of hub locations are railway infrastructure and population agglomeration. Policy implications are discussed in facilitating hub location decisions.
