Abstract

AbstractAn alternative format for the basic media utilization course at the University of Hawaii was developed on an individualized self‐paced, self‐instructional basis. The course, Media Practician, was offered to undergraduate students in a federally‐funded Alternative Teacher Education Program (ATEP). The Visual‐Tutorial (V‐T) learning system was designed to teach both theory and skills related to effective classroom utilization of audio‐visual media materials and equipment to pre‐service elementary school teachers during their third and fourth years of training. The underlying learning psychology utilized by this visual‐tutorial system is related to the self‐pacing, individualized, self‐instructional, programmed learning systems found in programmed texts, teaching machines and computer‐based learning (Butler 1970).
