Abstract

Data from the analysis of retinae from 55 species of tropical freshwater fishes are not consistent with the classic view of the distribution of visual pigments among vertebrates. Retinene 1 pigments were just as common as retinene 2 pigments among true freshwater fishes. Mixtures of these two pigments, expected only in euryhaline fishes, also occurred frequently within this group.
