Abstract

We have been able to observe dendritic crystal growth from supercooled pure fluid 4He. Experiments were conducted for pressures between 210 and 6500 bar, covering the existence range of hcp 4He ( P ⪅ 1.1 kbar) and fcc 4He ( P ⪆ 1.1 kbar). Dendrites growing at large supercooling show side-arm development, whereas dendrites growing at low supercooling grow without side-arms. The dendrite morphology in hcp 4He is strongly influenced by crystal anisotropy. Several unusual dendrite forms were observed, including dendrites with side-arm development on only one side, and non-parabolic dendrite tips.
