Abstract

This article is an overview of visual methods in the social sciences, with an emphasis on sociology. The article notes that, relative to other methods, visual methods are underdeveloped in the social sciences. It details forms of visual methods, from empirical to semiotic. Particular attention is paid to the use of photographs in the research process. The article also discusses problems in visual methods, including ethics and matters of technology and representation. Finally, it discusses issues specific to the publication and other dissemation of visual research in the social sciences.
