Abstract

This paper address the issue of the formal definition of visual (graphical) languages, and their applications to system specification and development. The main assertion is that such visual languages can be used for (formal) system specification. And that they would possess the benefits of formal specification languages, as well as the intuitive appeal and ease of use of graphical methods. This paper presents a conceptual and formal model for the definition of visual languages. This model is then used to define an aspect of language support environments, namely a language-directed editing facility.
