Abstract

In its broadest sense, visual journalism refers to the communication conveyed through the overall design of a platform or a site. More often, visual journalism refers to specific dimensions of visual storytelling across platforms, such as photos, videos, animations, and data visualizations, or it simply refers to the modalities of multimedia storytelling. The conceptual framing of visual journalism has varied throughout media history and has been closely interrelated with technology development. The entry includes a brief discussion of ethical challenges prompted by evolving technologies such as smartphones, camera drones, and virtual reality tools, which all exemplify increasing options for user interaction within visual journalism.
