Abstract

HAYES, DONALD S., and SCHULZE, SHARON A. Visual Encoding in Preschoolers' Serial Retention. CHILD DEVELOPMENT, 1977, 48, 1066-1070. In order to determine whether young children consistently employ a visual code for remembering pictures in serial recall, preschoolers were required to match picture lists composed of visually similar, phonetically similar, or unrelated items. Visual similarity among stimuli significantly decreased the accuracy of subjects' picture matching, but phonetic similarity had no apparent effect on their retention level. These findings were interpreted as reflecting young children's reliance on visual rather than verbal attributes of picture stimuli for serial retention. The possible role of visual rehearsal in preschoolers' encoding processes was discussed.
