Visual Conceptual Metaphors in Picturebooks: Implications for Social Justice

Abstract

Few studies have been undertaken that explore visual conceptual metaphors in picturebooks. As these types of metaphors are instrumental in creating and reinforcing networks of associations that result in pervasive cognitive schema, it may be fruitful to use schema criticism to explore their implications for social justice. Close readings of several picturebooks are offered to examine visual conceptual metaphors that perpetuate conventional schemas of gender and race, with extended attention given to the ways in which images that metaphorically link darkness with fear, loneliness, and irrationality may contribute to dysconscious racism, and how some picturebooks effectively challenge those schemas.
