Abstract

Sixteen aphasic and sixteen nonaphasic subjects participated in visual and auditory sequencing tasks in which they reported the order of light flashes and pure tones by pushing buttons which were paired with the lights and tones. Aphasic subjects as a group exhibited poorer performance on both visual and auditory sequencing tasks. However, some individual aphasic subjects performed the tasks as well as nonaphasic subjects. “Expressive” aphasic subjects had more difficulty with auditory than visual sequencing, and “semantic” aphasic subjects exhibited substantial deficits in both visual and auditory sequencing.
