Visiting consultant

Abstract

Those who have worked in the university environment for many years possibly have come up through the route of a faculty position. For such individuals, the concept of a sabbatical leave is familiar. Since I spent seven of the last ten years of my career primarily as a department chairman, I am very familiar with this concept and am aware that the individual, as well as the institution hosting the individual on a sabbatical leave, can benefit from this program. Conversely, the whole process may become a vacation where a professor "goes home" and visits with former major professors and colleagues at one of his prior institutions. All of this is background for the concept which I feel can be beneficial in a computing center environment, i.e., having a Visiting Research Consultant for a period of time, whether it be one month, one semester, or one year.
