Abstract

The prevalence and causes of severe visual defects are considered. The continuing occurence of retinopathy of prematurity is high-lighted and the importance of monitoring this condition stressed. Pre-school screening for visual problems is discussed and the importance of early detection emphasized. The prevalence of visual acuity defects in school age children is presented from data derived from the National British Birth Cohorts.
